BEYOND A CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION

Custom & Project Requirements

Explore how a controlled drawing connects geometry, material, interfaces and project references. See which details define a drawing-based fitting and how the complete requirement fits together.

EXPLORE A CONTROLLED DRAWING

Read the component in layers.

Separate the connection interfaces, material information and drawing reference to see what each contributes.

A conceptual drawing with three annotation layersA simplified fitting outline is annotated with connections, material information, and a drawing reference and revision. It has no dimensions and is not a manufacturing drawing.MATERIAL REFERENCECONNECTION INTERFACESDRAWING REFERENCEREVISION

Interfaces describe how components meet.

A controlled drawing can define the interfaces between the fitting and adjoining pipework or an assembly. The family name explains the general function; it may not describe every interface detail.

An outline does not identify the material.

The drawing and its referenced specifications can define a material designation, condition and acceptance requirements. The shape of a component alone does not establish those material details.

The drawing issue is part of its meaning.

A drawing number identifies the reference, and the revision identifies its issue. Different issues may define different geometry, materials or acceptance details.

Understand drawing-controlled fittings

Illustrative geometry only. These layers teach how a drawing is read; they do not define installation dimensions, tolerances or a supplied component.

01 / ENQUIRY SCOPE

Custom materials. Customer drawings.

Drawing-based fittings

Provide the controlled drawing, revision and units. Identify critical dimensions and interfaces.

Drawing-based requirements

Custom material specifications

Send the full material designation and governing specification with the fitting geometry and quantity.

Material requirements

Small-quantity enquiries

State the quantities by line item, required date and destination. Feasibility and commercial terms depend on the actual requirement.

02 / DRAWING CHECKLIST

A useful drawing tells the full story.

Include with the drawing

  • Drawing number, revision and units
  • Material specification and quantity
  • Critical dimensions and tolerances
  • Connection details and mating component references
  • Inspection and documentation requirements

Identify the controlled details

Provide the customer-approved geometry, tolerances, material specification and current drawing revision. Identify the mating interfaces and acceptance requirements defined by the customer.

Custom requirements remain subject to confirmation of manufacturing feasibility and supply against the customer’s specification.

03 / CUSTOMER DRAWING / MATERIAL / SUPPLY

Define the supplied component.

Gather the references

Bring together the fitting description, current drawing, material specification and quantities.

Identify the critical detail

Mark the interface, tolerance, special material requirement or constraint that needs particular attention.

Connect the references

Understand how the drawing, material specification and project requirements describe the same component.

Explore reference roles
Use the current controlled referencesThe customer’s specification and approved drawing define the component. Keep the drawing issue, material designation and purchase references consistent.
