END CLOSURE REQUIREMENTS

Socket Weld Caps

Socket weld caps close the end of a pipe run. The pipe enters the cap’s socket, while the closed body terminates the connection.

01 / PRODUCT OVERVIEW

A defined end to the pipe run.

A cap is a closure fitting rather than a through-flow connection. Its purpose is to terminate a pipe end in the arrangement defined by the piping design.

A socket-weld cap forms a welded closure. If the application needs repeated access, the design should identify the appropriate access arrangement rather than assume that a welded cap is removable.

02 / CONSTRUCTION

Understand the closure.

Socket connection

The recessed connection receives the pipe end. The external weld joins the cap to the pipe.

Closed fitting body

The body terminates the pipe run rather than providing another through connection.

03 / PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE

A closure has a different role from access.

Welded closure versus a separable connection

A cap terminates the pipe end as a welded closure. A union connects two pipe sections through a separable joint and continues the line. If a design needs repeated access, that access arrangement must be considered separately from the cap’s closing function.

Understand separable union joints
Does a cap control the flow like a valve?

A cap closes a pipe end. It has no adjustable flow-control mechanism; its function is termination.

Is a socket-weld cap a removable cover?

Its connection to the pipe is welded. It should not be treated as a cover intended for repeated opening and closing.

04 / SELECTION CONSIDERATIONS

What matters in the application.

Closure duty

Identify the intended termination and any application-specific requirements.

Space & geometry

Check clearance and any drawing-controlled dimensions around the pipe end.

Material & specification

Specify the closure material and governing requirements together with the connection size.

05 / UNDERSTAND THE SPECIFICATION

What to include.

Caps: specification checklist

  • Connection size and mating pipe details
  • Specified pressure class
  • Material grade and governing specification
  • Any dimensional constraint or drawing reference
Order specificationDimensions, ratings, tolerances and availability are confirmed against the actual requirement. These illustrations are not manufacturing drawings.
