KEEP THE REFERENCES CONNECTED

Standards & Specifications

Understand the standards behind socket-weld fittings: product geometry, material specifications, piping requirements and inspection documents. Keep the governing edition and project additions with every enquiry.

EXPLORE THE DOCUMENT LAYERS

Four questions. Four reference scopes.

See how fitting, material, system and inspection references describe different parts of the same requirement.

Four document layers around a componentFitting, material, piping-system and inspection-record references surround the component. Each layer addresses a different scope.COMPONENTFittingMaterialSystemRecords

The component’s geometry and construction.

Fitting references describe the component itself. Different fitting forms can have different reference scopes; one fitting standard does not replace material or piping-system requirements.

The material has a separate specification.

Material specifications establish material requirements. They answer a different question from the fitting’s shape or the requirements of the installed piping system. These examples do not select a material for an application.

Explore material reference scopes

The fitting sits inside a complete system.

A piping code extends beyond one component. Component conformity alone does not establish compliance of the installed piping system. The application and project specification determine the governing code.

Understand piping and document requirements

A document type explains the record.

Inspection-document references identify the type of record associated with a metallic product. They do not define socket-weld fitting geometry, and a document reference is not an automatic statement of product conformity.

Read about inspection documents

This map explains document scopes. It does not automatically select a standard, material, pressure class or inspection requirement.

01 / SOCKET WELD STANDARD REFERENCES

Know what each reference covers.

A fitting standard, a material specification and a piping code answer different questions. Use these references to understand the documents in your project specification.

ASME / FITTING REQUIREMENTS

ASME B16.11

Forged socket-weld fittings

Covers forged socket-welding and threaded fittings, including dimensional requirements, tolerances, marking, materials and rating provisions.

Include in the enquiry

Identify the socket-weld configuration, applicable edition, connection sizes and specified pressure class. Confirm the exact material and any additional project requirements separately.

ASME reference
FITTING REFERENCE

MSS SP-83

Pipe unions

Addresses forged carbon-steel, alloy-steel, stainless-steel and nickel-alloy pipe unions with socket-welding or threaded ends, including dimensions, finish, tolerances, materials and performance requirements.

Include in the enquiry

Specify the socket-weld end connection, complete union assembly, material and applicable edition. Include mating or replacement references when relevant.

FITTING REFERENCE

MSS SP-79

Socket-welding reducer inserts

Addresses reducer inserts for use with ASME B16.11 socket-weld fittings, including insert dimensions, tolerances, materials, marking and rating provisions.

Include in the enquiry

Identify the larger and smaller connections, mating fitting and pipe details, material and applicable edition. Check the intended assembly against the governing requirements.

FITTING REFERENCE

MSS SP-97

Forged branch outlets

Addresses integrally reinforced forged branch outlet fittings with socket-welding, threaded or butt-welding ends. Its scope includes dimensions, materials, marking and strength requirements.

Include in the enquiry

Identify the socket-weld branch connection, header and branch sizes, relevant pipe details, material and applicable edition. Confirm that the proposed outlet falls within the standard’s scope.

Applicability comes firstThese summaries explain reference scopes. The project specification determines the governing standard and edition. A listed reference does not establish FERROBEND availability or conformity for every fitting, material or class.

02 / MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

The material has its own reference.

These are examples of material specifications that can appear in forged fitting enquiries. They identify material requirements; the fitting’s geometry and connection requirements still need their own reference.

Material references: scope and enquiry information
ReferenceWhat it coversWhat to specify
ASTM A105/A105MASTM reference Carbon-steel forgings for piping components.Specify the material designation and edition alongside the fitting standard.
ASTM A182/A182MASTM reference Forged low-alloy and stainless-steel piping components for pressure systems.State the exact grade; a material-family name alone does not identify it.
ASTM A350/A350MASTM reference Carbon- and low-alloy-steel forgings with notch-toughness requirements, intended for low-temperature service.Include the specified grade, service requirements and any project additions.
ASTM B564ASTM reference Nickel-alloy forgings.Identify the exact alloy designation, specified condition and applicable edition.
Nonferrous fittingsASME B16.52 covers forged socket-welding and threaded fittings in titanium, titanium alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys. Check its material and product scope for the actual requirement. ASME B16.52 reference ↗

03 / SYSTEM & DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS

The component sits within a system.

PIPING CODE / PROJECT CONTEXT

ASME B31.3

Process piping

A piping code covering process-piping design, materials, fabrication, assembly, examination, inspection and testing. It provides system requirements beyond the individual fitting standard.

When it is specified by the project

Include the applicable edition and project engineering requirements. Component conformity alone does not establish compliance of the installed piping system.

ASME reference
INSPECTION DOCUMENTS

EN 10204

Types of inspection documents

Defines inspection-document types for metallic products. It helps identify the record required with the order; it does not define socket-weld fitting geometry.

When inspection documents are required

State the required document type, such as 3.1 where applicable, together with the material specification and agreed inspection scope.

BSI reference
Use the project’s governing codeASME B31.3 is a process-piping example. The application and project specification determine which piping code, material requirements and inspection-document types apply.

04 / GOVERNING DOCUMENTS

Product. Material. Acceptance.

Product requirements

Identify the applicable dimensional standard, fitting configuration, connection sizes and pressure-class designation.

Material requirements

State the complete grade and material specification, including any additional project requirements.

Material guidance

Acceptance requirements

Provide special tolerances, inspection criteria, marking requirements and any project-specific document references.

Conflicting references?Identify which documents govern and flag any differences between the drawing, purchase description and project specification for review.

05 / RECORDS & INSPECTION

Specify the records with the fitting.

Documentation checklist

  • Material Test Certificates and EN 10204 3.1, where applicable
  • Customer or project-specific inspection requirements
  • Third-party inspection requirements, where applicable
  • Required document format and purchase references
  • Marking and record requirements stated by the project

06 / SIZE & CLASS DESIGNATIONS

Keep every designation explicit.

Connection sizes

List the size of every connection. For a reducing fitting, identify the run, branch or larger and smaller connection individually.

Specified pressure class

Copy the designation from the project specification. Include the referenced standard and edition; do not substitute a class based on appearance.

Complete service requirements

Include the service conditions and any project engineering requirements that affect selection. Material and fitting geometry belong in the same review.

Engineering selectionThis website does not calculate pressure–temperature ratings or provide installation dimensions. The governing specification and engineering review define the requirement.
