CONNECTION CONFIGURATIONS

Socket Weld Couplings

Socket weld couplings provide a compact connection between pipe components. Full, half and reducing configurations address different connection arrangements.

01 / PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Connect the run. Define each end.

A full coupling joins two pipe ends along a common axis. A reducing coupling combines that connecting function with a change in connection size.

A half coupling provides a socket connection at one end for an attachment arrangement defined by the design. It should be specified with the required interface details rather than treated as interchangeable with a full coupling.

02 / CONFIGURATIONS

How the configurations differ.

Full couplings

Two socket ends form an in-line connection between pipe sections.

Half couplings

One socket end forms part of a design-defined attachment arrangement.

Reducing couplings

Different connection sizes are joined along the same axis.

03 / PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE

A welded connection or a separable joint?

Coupling versus union

A full socket-weld coupling joins pipe ends in line through a welded connection. A union adds a central separable joint while its socket-weld ends remain attached to the pipe. They connect a line in different ways.

Understand the union assembly
Is a half coupling simply a shorter full coupling?

A half coupling provides one socket end for a design-defined attachment. A full coupling has two ends for an in-line connection. Their interface arrangements are different.

How does a reducing coupling differ from a reducer insert?

A reducing coupling has its own connecting body with different connection sizes. A reducer insert works within a receiving socket fitting to adapt that connection to a smaller pipe.

04 / SELECTION CONSIDERATIONS

What matters in the application.

Configuration

Identify full, half or reducing before specifying the connection sizes.

Mating components

For reducing couplings, list both sizes. For half couplings, include the attachment or interface drawing.

Assembly detail

Check the overall connection arrangement against the applicable specification and drawing.

05 / UNDERSTAND THE SPECIFICATION

What to include.

Couplings: specification checklist

  • Full, half or reducing configuration
  • Each connection size and mating pipe details
  • Specified pressure class and material designation
  • Installation drawing where geometry or fit is project-specific
Order specificationDimensions, ratings, tolerances and availability are confirmed against the actual requirement. These illustrations are not manufacturing drawings.
